Idle Moments Project

41205223_10156491921706153_3651533168734896128_n.jpg

A sextet of musicians from Detroit and Ann Arbor come together to perform Grant Green's 1965 album “Idle Moments.” This performance is about remembering and honoring musical roots and connecting creatively.

Gayelynn McKinney - Drums
Eric Nachtrab - Bass
Alex Anest - Guitar
Janelle Reichman - Tenor Sax
Alexis Lombre - Piano
Peyton Miller - Vibraphone

A sextet of musicians hailing from Detroit and Ann Arbor will come together on October 12 to perform Grant Green's 1965 album “Idle Moments” live at Kerrytown Concert House. The original recording featured Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Duke Pearson on piano, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Bob Cranshaw on double bass, and Al Harewood on drums. Guitarist Alex Anest has assembed his ensemble with some of the best artists in the area including Janelle Reichman on tenor, Alexis Lombre on piano, Peyton Miller on vibes, Eric Nachtrab on bass, and Gayelynn McKinney on drums. This performance is about remembering and honoring our musical roots as well as connecting creatively and emotionally with our peers. Idle Moments was just one of many great records released on Blue Note during the label's heyday. Two of the four tunes on the record have become standard jazz repertoire while the other two are not as well known. Art and artists exist in constant tension between tradition and innovation. The musicians who are part of the Idle Moments Project enjoy exploring that tension.

Miss Kim hosts a monthly Suckling Pig Party - each month features a different theme.
The theme for September - A Bounty of Fluffy Buns!

Buns/Bao, call them what you will, were our beginning. Our star feature when we were nothing but a little food cart without even a kitchen to call our own. We're super excited to make Buns the theme of our third Suckling Pig Party!

Pulled Suckling Pig. Served family style with ginger scallion sauce, pickled mustard greens, pickles green tomatoes, gochujang mayo and more. But Chef Ji Hye Kim won't stop there [Look at that image over there on the left]. She's thinking crispy rice balls, a crunchy sprouted mung bean salad that is as delicious as it is healthy and who knows what else ....

Marcus Tardelli, guitar

41302493_10156491852526153_5265619107348217856_n.jpg

Marcus Tardelli is one of the most remarkable guitarists to emerge from Brazil. From a very young age, he was deeply interested in music and drawn particularly to orchestral works. The guitar, however, was the only instrument available to him, so he developed ways to play the orchestral harmonies he loved, and ultimately created a new school of thought in guitar technique.

"Even if Guinga never pronounced that Marcus Tardelli was the 'greatest acoustic guitar player that Brazil has produced in history,' the musical evidence on Unha e Carne would certainly put him on a pedestal right next to Egberto Gismonti, Sérgio and Odair Assad. In fact, based on technique, expression, intonation and dynamics, there is a solid case for ranking Tardelli very close to guitarists such as Julian Bream and, perhaps, even to Andrés Segovia." - RAUL D'GAMA ROSE, ALL ABOUT JAZZ

“Marcus Tardelli has an ear that is directly connected to his soul, capable of recognizing the universe of a composer in all its depth, and reproducing it in all its fullness.” - PAULO SALES, FOLHA DA BAHIA (BRAZIL)

"Marcus Tardelli is the most important acoustic guitar player of our time. He is the next step for the guitar." - GENIL CASTRO, BRAZILIAN GUITARIST
