VIP tickets available! Includes private Meet & Greet, signed poster and CD.

Shoshana Bean’s four independent solo releases have all topped the iTunes R&B, Blues and Jazz charts in the US and UK in peak positions including #1. Her 2014 release, Shadows to Light, earned her a Hot Shot debut at #10 on the Billboard Blues charts and her fourth and most recent studio album, Spectrum, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Jazz Charts.

This brand new release thrills with a fresh new take on the classic tradition of big band. Inspired largely by Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and Barbra Streisand, Spectrum promises to be Shoshana’s most impressive project to date. Backed by an 18 piece big band with arrangements by Grammy award-nominated arranger Alan Ferber, Bean’s powerhouse vocals, for which she has become known, are visceral and heartfelt. She weaves effortlessly through haunting originals, new workings of contemporary hits and beloved classics.

Shoshana is a veteran of the Broadway stage having made her debut in the original cast of Hairspray and starring as the very first replacement for Elphaba in Wicked. She won a IRNE Award for her performance as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl and earned a Jeff Award nomination for her portrayal of CeeCee Bloom in the pre-Broadway musical production of Beaches. She has sold out solo concerts around the globe, lent her voice to countless films and TV shows, amassed millions of YouTube views, and performed with Ariana Grande, David Foster, Postmodern Jukebox, Brian McKnight, and Michael Jackson.

Do your projects stop when you make a mistake you can’t fix? With Sunday’s help, you’ll look at the anatomy of the knit and purl stitches and learn how to unknit and what to do when you’ve knitted instead of purled (or vice versa), dropped or twisted your stitches, turned your cable the wrong way, or gotten off your stitch count. Sunday will also cover what to do when you don’t have enough yarn left to finish a row and take a look at lifelines (integral to lace work). Take this class, and you’ll have the tools you need to get going again!

The members are amongst the most sought after young jazz performers in Norway today.

"No Scandinavian group since Atomic has so powerfully addressed and remade the free jazz of the 60s like Cortex. In a country whose creative music scene is celebrated for its bold hybrids of disparate sounds, Cortex goes another way, embracing tradition in its own unique way, with a personality sketched out by the strength of Johansson’s indelible themes and four distinctive improvisational voices." - Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

"It sizzles with a barely contained energy, one that has yet to be harnessed or become world-weary." - 4.5 of 5 stars from Mark Corroto, AllAboutJazz

VIP tickets available! Includes private Meet & Greet, signed poster and CD.
Terry Lower, piano • Paul Keller, bass • Pete Siers, drums

String bassist, bandleader, and composer Paul Keller hosts a new Jazz At Kerrytown Concert House series which showcases jazz pianists from Michigan, the mid-west and the world.

Paul Keller and his “Imported Wine” VIP musical guests are guaranteed to entertain, delight and amaze with their jazz creativity, verve and virtuosity.

Paul Keller
Paul Keller is one of the busiest bassists in the Detroit area today, earning the nickname “The House Bass Player For The State Of Michigan.” Since 1989, Paul has led the 15-piece Paul Keller Orchestra, which plays original, obscure and classic big band material from all periods of jazz history, and performs every Monday night at the Zal Gaz Grotto in Ann Arbor. Paul also plays in the popular Keller/Kocher Quartet and in The Paul Keller Ensemble, a three-horn sextet that features creative arrangements by Keller and his bandmates. Paul has been recognized internationally for his association with pianist/singer Diana Krall and guitarist Russell Malone.

Terry Lower
Voted by the West Michigan Jazz Society as their 2016 Musician Of The Year, Terry Lower is a virtuoso jazz pianist with his own sound. A renowned fixture on the Michigan jazz scene for over 35 years, he can be heard at his best on his Four Trios Vol. 1 and 2 CDs. Also earning the reputation as a wonderful accompanist, Terry played 2 Jazz tours in Italy with vocalists Betty Joplin and Edye Evans Hyde. While he has been a greatly in-demand sideman, working with such artists as Benny Golson, Frank Morgan, David “Fathead” Newman and Kevin Mahogany, it is at the head of his own trio and quintet that Terry’s playing and writing are best showcased. Inspired by Oscar Peterson, Monty Alexander and Art Tatum, Terry Lower is an exciting and fun pianist who swings hard and adds his own twist to the straight ahead jazz that he loves. Also a prolific writer and arranger, Terry's latest writing projects include full symphony arrangements for vocalist Edye Evans Hyde, who he has performed with for many years. The debut of some of these orchestrations were performed to a packed house at a concert in May, 2016 with Terry’s quartet, Edye and the Rochester Symphony Orchestra.John is also a Grammy-winning composer. Jazz legend, Nancy Wilson, recorded "These Golden Years", a song that John co-wrote with lyricist D. Channsin Berry, for her 2006 Grammy-winning CD, “Turned to Blue”. Most recently, John co-wrote a song called “Stained Glass” with Melissa Manchester for his new album, “Say It”. John and Melissa also co-wrote a song called “Big Light” for her 20th studio album, “You Gotta Love The Life”, featuring a duet with Melissa and Al Jarreau. Jazz singer, Mary Stallings, recorded "Stuck in a Dream" (2005, “Remember Love”), and “Before You Know It” (2010, “Dream”), two songs John co-wrote with lyricist K. Lawrence Dunham. Deana Martin also recorded “Stuck in a Dream” on her latest album, “Destination Moon”.

Performing Franz Schubert's Schwanengesang in it's entirety, with a brief intermission.

Schwanengesang, or Swan Song, was published in 1829 just a few month’s after Schubert’s death, and was advertised as the composer’s third major song cycle by the publisher. However, this collection of songs was not a true cycle, as the poems came from three different poets; Ludwig Rellstab, Heinrich Heine, and Johann Seidl and the texts do not tell a continuous story. Schubert composed the first 13, of 14 songs in a single sitting on consecutive manuscript pages..

From her early days leading a jazz trio in small Chicago nightclubs, Patricia Barber has drawn extravagant accolades. The praise came at first from local writers, impressed by her unique arrangements and coolly composed piano improvisations. As she added vocals to her repertoire, the praise poured in from national reviewers intoxicated by her recordings. And when (after years of international touring) she began to focus on her own compositions, kudos arrived from new fans, besotted by her lapidary lyrics and her often indelible imagery.

Joel Hastings Memorial Concert

37585947_10156376801991153_6268980753967611904_n.jpg

Joel Hastings, internationally acclaimed pianist, was a long time resident of Ann Arbor and beloved in the musical community. His friends and former students will gather to present a musical tribute to this amazing pianist.

ABOUT JOEL HASTINGS
The Canadian-born pianist, Joel R. Hastings, was an Ontario resident, and spent his childhood in North Bay and Windsor. He earned his ARCT diplomas in piano and organ from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, receiving a gold medal for the highest score in the country. After graduating from Sandwich Secondary School, he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He followed that up with graduate studies and Master of Music degree in piano. He took some time off school to play concerts, teach privately and record CD's before getting a doctorate (DMA) in piano as well from the same University. He was the winner of the 2006 8th International Web Concert Hall Competition, and the 1993 International Bach Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He was the recipient of multiple grants from The Canadian Council for the Performing Arts.

After delivering a stunning performance at the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, one reporter designated Joel Hastings the “audience favorite” while another declared, “the kinetic fingers of this young Canadian reminded me strongly of his late countryman, Glenn Gould.” In a Newsweek review he “pulled the audience to their feet after a wild performance of Franz Liszt’s Totentanz.” Reviewers have described his playing as passionate, mesmerizing, hypnotic, and transcendental.

Paloma Nunez Regueiro Art Statement
Since I was a child I had the experience of moving from
place to place, the knowledge of my grandparents migrations, the longing for the previous place, and the certainty that nothing is permanent.

AJ, who hails from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, is the color fiend behind AJHC Wools, and we are happy to welcome her and her beauties to the Spun family. Friday will serve as our shop launch party for AJHC’s Basic Sock, a pretty plied staple that works up into a soft, pliable fabric that will treat your feet and/or your whole bad self. We found ourselves particularly smitten with AJ's “Mythical Gods” collection, a range of vibrant colorways that we hope will lend you a little of their energy whenever you work with or wear them.

Note too that AJ will also be bringing along some stunners dyed up on her Yak Sock base, an indulgent blend of Merino, yak, and nylon that brings colors a particular warmth and depth. Yak Sock, it must be admitted, really couldn’t be any softer without disappearing from the physical plane altogether. Poof! AJ's Yak Sock will only be available in the shop on Friday night, so don’t miss your chance to swoon over it.
